It's been a week since I’ve come back from Martinique and I've been recovering over the last few days - jet lag hit me well and the sudden change of weather (for the worse) hasn't improved my mood at all. Hence the lack of any activity last Saturday... oops! But today I come to you with some content rich in juicy experiences and fabulous photos, and that's because I'm going to tell you about the Carnival in Martinique that I saw and experienced two weeks ago.
Mija tydzień od mojego powrotu z Martyniki i przez ostatnie kilka dni dochodziłam do siebie – dopadł mnie jet lag, a nagła zmiana pogody (i to na gorszą) wcale nie poprawiała mi humoru. Stąd też brak jakiejkolwiek aktywności w zeszłą sobotę… ups! Ale dzisiaj przychodzę do was z treścią bogatą w soczyste przeżycia i bajeczne zdjęcia, a to dlatego, że opowiem wam o karnawale na Martynice, który widziałam i który przeżyłam.
I must admit that I had never heard of Carnival being celebrated so pompously in Martinique - it even has its own page on Wikipedia, but only in French :p It is considered as one of the most beautiful and interesting carnivals in the world! Over a few days, city centers are shut down and from 4PM parades, processions, and dancing in the streets begin. Literally it’s a big four-days-party.
Przyznaję, że nigdy wcześniej nie słyszałam o tym, że na Martynice karnawał jest obchodzony tak hucznie i na bogato – ma nawet swoją stronę na Wikipedii, ale tylko po francusku :p Jest uważany z jednej z najpiękniejszych i najbardziej ciekawych karnawałów na świecie! W ciągu kilku dni centra miast są zamykane, a od czternastej zaczynają się parady, procesje, tańce na ulicach, jednym słowem – wielka impreza.
It all takes place during the so-called "jours gras", literally "fat days" – these are the days that precede Lent and from Saturday evening to Wednesday inclusive, crowds of people revel in the streets. During these days, there are parades and processions of groups who create choreographies and costumes and musical accompaniment before carnival time. Each day has a theme - Sunday is all colors, Monday is 'mariage burlesque' which means men dress up as women and women dress up as men. Tuesday is 'diable rouge', dominated by red and black colors and devil horns, and Wednesday is the burning of the carnival king, or so-called Vaval, as a symbolic end to the 'fat days'.
Wszystko odbywa się w czasie tzw. „jours gras”, czyli dosłownie „tłustych dni” – są to dni, które poprzedzają Wielki Post i od soboty wieczora do środy włącznie tłumy ludzi bawią się na ulicach. W trakcie tych kilku dni odbywają się parady i procesje grup, które tworzą choreografie i kostiumy oraz akompaniament muzyczny przed czasem karnawału. Każdy dzień ma swój motyw przewodni – niedziela to wszystkie kolory, poniedziałek to „mariage burlesque” czyli mężczyźni przebierają się za kobiety, a kobiety za mężczyzn. Wtorek to „diable rouge”, dominuje kolor czerwony i czarny oraz diabelskie rogi, a środa to spalenie króla karnawału, czyli tzw. Vaval, jako symboliczne zakończenie „tłustych dni”.
This Carnival was an amazing cultural experience for me, as in Poland Carnival is somehow not celebrated at all and nothing happens apart from eating donuts. Martinique, on the other hand, turns into one big party club! I was very impressed by the freedom to dance, dress up and have a great time regardless of age, appearance or gender. All generations from the youngest to the oldest are having fun. And that is really beautiful.
Cały ten czas był dla mnie niezwykłym doświadczeniem kulturowym, tym bardziej, że w Polsce karnawał nie jest jakoś hucznie obchodzony i oprócz jedzenia pączków nic się nie wydarza. Z kolei Martynika zamienia się w jeden wielki klub imprezowy! Byłam pod ogromnym wrażeniem wolności tańca, ubioru i wielkiej swobody bez względu na wiek, wygląd czy płeć. Bawią się wszystkie pokolenia od najmłodszych aż po najstarszych. I to jest naprawdę piękne.
But (!) there is one thing that annoyed me a bit and that is the women's outfits. Because on the one hand it's cool that they're showing them off, they don't have complexes (I suppose) and they're having fun. However, in the back of my mind I have a thought that it's a bit like showing off your body as the only interesting thing, that looks are the only thing that matters. Like they’re trying to sell themselves at the price of the size of their boobs or butt... and yet the body is not everything. Of course, I may be wrong, but the thought sits in my head anyway.
Ale (!) jest jedna rzecz, która trochę mi zgrzytała, a mianowicie stroje kobiet. Bo z jednej strony fajnie, że je pokazują, nie mają kompleksów (tak przypuszczam) i świetnie się bawią. Jednak z tyłu mojej głowy czai się myśl, że to trochę jak pokazywanie ciała jako jedynej interesującej rzeczy, że tylko wygląd się liczy. Taka próba sprzedaży siebie za cenę wielkości biustu czy pośladków… a przecież ciało to nie wszystko. Oczywiście może się mylę, ale ta myśl i tak siedzi w mojej głowie.
Nevertheless, I had a great time! And if you get the chance to go, I highly recommend it! The weather during this period is also good :D
Niemniej jednak bawiłam się świetnie! I jak będziecie mieć okazję, żeby pojechać, to gorąco polecam! Pogoda w tym okresie również dopisuje :D
