Living abroad

It's been a year since I moved to Vienna, and it's hard for me to believe because it feels like I've been living here for years. It took me a long time to understand that I live here, and it wasn't until I started buying things for the house, some decorations, or even a simple mixer that I felt I was settling in.

Living abroad has taught me many things. First of all, to consciously invest time in maintaining relationships, friendships. Moving out always verifies a lot of friendships, some of them simply die a natural death, some of them go into a less intense mode, and some of them still hold on very well, despite the distance. It's not always easy, and I had to rethink and reorganize it, too, especially since I was starting to meet new people here in Vienna, with whom I had easier contact.

The second thing was visiting the home country. Here I already had some practice, because in 2023 I moved out of my hometown to go to Lodz to study, and I was coming practically every weekend or every other weekend to Poznan. Even then, it happened to me to plan too much for those two days, and there were times when I ran from one meeting to another... well, sometimes I still make this mistake, but I try to really wisely arrange meetings with friends or family. The problem now is that I no longer come every two weeks but every three months, and as a result the number of meetings keeps increasing for me, because on the one hand I want to see people I didn't see last time I came to Poland, but on the other hand I have my “mandatory” meetings that I don't want to cancel, and suddenly I find myself wanting to meet twenty people in two days... oops. This is something I'm still working on.

Druga sprawa to odwiedziny w kraju.

Surprisingly, I don't miss my home country that much. I've written about it before here, so I won't talk about it too much, but there is one thing I do miss sometimes - the freedom to speak. My daily language routine looks like this: at work I speak German and English, at home I speak French, and when I call my mother it's in Polish, plus most of the time I exchange some messages with friends, and then I also write in Polish. And while I know French very well, it's still not my native language, so there are times when I don't understand or don't know how to say something. Sometimes it’s frustrating, but I know that at some point I’ll be fluent even in German.

If someone were to ask me if I regret going abroad, I would answer that I absolutely do not regret it. I don't know of any other experience that teaches life so strongly and gives so much experience. It is a beautiful adventure, and despite the difficult moments (who doesn't have them?) I believe that if there is an opportunity and possibility to go, it is worth a try, even if it is only for a month.

Do you live abroad? Let me know where! And for how long :) I'm curious how many people here have gone abroad!

The struggle of moving out from your hometown

Today briefly and to the point. As you will soon see for yourself, the topic is important and not easy, which stresses me a little, but I concluded that it is necessary to talk about such things as well. Well, I have been living abroad for almost a year, and even before that, for almost two years, I lived outside my hometown. What do these two moments in my life have in common? Returning to my hometown for the weekend and sprinting to meet everyone. Did I succeed? Not really.

And here is the problem: I always told myself that, after all, one weekend, two days, is quite a lot of time. But I was forgetting about the time I had to spend on the trip itself—to go and to go back—so out of these two days, I had, let's say, one and a half. This is not an incredibly large amount of time, especially when the obligatory point is to visit my grandmothers.

There were several times when I “packed” three meetings in a day, which eventually ended with the words “sorry, but I already have to go to another meeting” and fatigue, because after all, I was spending the whole day out. Plus, there is the guilt that I didn't spend enough time with this friend, and with this friend I didn't have time to meet at all.

After a few such exhausting weekends, I came to the conclusion that it's pointless, and however it sounds - I have to choose who I want to meet with. I don't like this tactic, because you can always accuse of “favoring people,” but when you only have those two days, it's hard to make time for everyone.

Now that I live abroad, my situation is a little more complicated. I don't come as often, so it's even more difficult to see all my friends. Nevertheless, I try to see as many people as possible—my grandmothers are an invariable, constant highlight—but I don't always succeed.

I end today's post with a small appeal, but also a question. The appeal is to all those whose friends have left the hometown - all sorts of words/phrases “it's a pity you came for such a short time” or “it's a pity you have to go now” are not the best message and often create guilt (or at least that's how it works for me). A better option would be to say “thank you for finding the time! I'm glad we could meet”. Don't take this the wrong way - it's not a criticism, just a suggestion that it can be expressed differently.

And for those in the same situation, here is the question: what is your strategy for such short visits to your hometown? I'm curious how you guys organize your time!

The struggle of moving out from your hometown

Geeez, I did it again...

My routine is a bit out of the track, as I've been running in Poznan for the past week. Well, maybe not literally, but almost. Well, every time I tell myself that this time will be different. And (almost) every time it is still as before.

Since I've been living in a different place, and I mean a different city in Poland and now a different country, every time I come to my hometown I prepare a meeting plan for myself. Yes, you read right, a meeting plan. I want to meet with everyone, and preferably with everyone separately, because then I can listen to what's going on there. Only this plan has one big downside - suddenly there are a lot of these meetings, and I'm running from one to another.

On the one hand, I know that these meetings are important, because they are with people who are important to me. But on the other hand, I am now after a week's vacation, which was not a real vacation. Actually it"s the opposite, it was kind of a work, because all this requires logistics, preparation, energy and concentration. So after my vacation I'm coming back .... tired.

Am I upset because of people wanting to meet? No, not at all. I'm a little bit upset with myself that I don't know how to organize it, and it's been like this for two years now. Maybe in the future I'll manage to organize it in such a way that everyone will be happy (or most of them), and I'll be relaxed. And if you have any interesting solutions, I'd love to hear! I'll accept all tips and recommendations.

Przyjmę wszystkie porady i polecajki.
